- North Salem is located about 50 miles north of New York City. It consists of 4 unincorporated townships: North Salem, Purdys, Croton Falls and Salem Center, and is one of the few rural towns in Westchester. Open land and horse farms are common characteristics of the area. Tucked away amongst these wide open spaces are local businesses, museums, restaurants and historic sites. The community enjoys the convenience of these local amenities within this serene and picturesque town.
North Salem was settled in 1731.
Union Hall was built in 1865 in the Italianate style. It is built into the side of a steep slope and has a two story front facade and four stories at the rear. It is a rectangular, wood frame building sheathed in unpainted clapboard. The building once functioned as a store, meeting hall, stagecoach stop, and residence.

Hayfields is a locally owned and operated “destination location” for the neighborhood, and surrounding area, of North Salem, N.Y. They specialize in gardening, fresh produce, dry goods, high-quality baked goods, small bites and delicious coffee and smoothies. Hayfields caters to everyone from locals and weekenders to commuters and seasonal visitors offering a variety of goods and services that meet the needs of the community while maintaining an agricultural and market vibe.
North Salem has two town parks – Joe Bohrdrum and Volunteers Park. Joe Bohrdrum is located at the top of Sunset Drive, accessible from Daniel Road off Hardscrabble Road, or Oak Ridge Road off Titicus Road. It has 2 tennis courts, a regulation size soccer field, 2 baseball fields, a children’s playground, basketball court and a picnic area.
Volunteers Park is located on June Road just north of the High School. It has a regulation soccer field and baseball field, a children’s playground and a basketball court.
Curriculum, instruction and assessment are well aligned in the North Salem Schools. The K-12 curriculum clearly reflects New York States 28 Learning Standards in the disciplines. North Salem has been a “school in good standing,” as designated by the New York State Department of Education Report Card. The curriculum process and writing initiated over the past five years has been comprehensive and commendable. Curriculum guides are well developed.
North Salem has one elementary school, one middle school, and one high school.
